As a Patient Care Tech in the Regional NICU at UAB, Avery Davis witnessed firsthand the challenges families face when navigating their child’s ongoing medical care. Determined to make a positive impact, she sought a way to support these families beyond the hospital. When she learned that one of her connections served on the RMHCA Junior Board, she knew she had found the perfect opportunity. Avery joined RMHCA in June 2024 as a Guest Services volunteer, assisting staff with a variety of administrative tasks and stepping in wherever help is needed. Her dedication has not gone unnoticed.
Family Care Specialist Angelina shared, “Avery is an incredible helping hand that our Family Care Specialists lean on. She is quick in assisting families and supporting front desk operations, all while doing so with a smile. We are grateful to have her help.”
For Avery, volunteering at RMHCA has been a deeply meaningful experience. “I have gained a new perspective on the resiliency it takes for families to uproot their lives and relocate for the extended care of a loved one,” she reflects.
One interaction in particular left a lasting impression on her. “I was cleaning dishes as a mother across from me washed her baby’s bottles. We struck up a conversation, and she opened up about the financial and emotional hardships she and her husband faced being away from home. Their child had received a devastating prognosis, and they were far from their family and support system in a new city, unsure of how long they would need to stay. Despite her distress, she expressed immense gratitude for the House staff and volunteers. It deeply touched me that in the midst of her own hardship, she still took the time to acknowledge those around her. I will never forget her sweet spirit and grateful heart.”
Avery recently earned her MS in Multidisciplinary Biomedical Sciences from UAB, and while she hopes to one day provide medical support to families, she knows that acts of kindness—like a warm meal, a clean dish, or a friendly face—can bring comfort in times of uncertainty.
Over the past nine months, Avery has dedicated nearly 50 hours of service to RMHCA, offering families the support and compassion they need during difficult times. We are incredibly grateful for her commitment and the warmth she brings to our House.
Thank you, Avery, for making a difference in the lives of RMHCA families.
